Amphibious Butterfly

Music duo based in Portland, Oregon

About

Amphibious Butterfly is a duo based out of Portland, Oregon. They play eclectic folk music influenced by modern jazz and acoustic pop. Much of their original compositions are written by Mallory (guitarist and lead vocalist), garnering inspiration from nature, life experiences, and artists such as Joni Mitchell and Esperanza Spalding. Johnny provides support as a multi-instrumentalist (bass, guitar, vocals). The duo often combines their voices to create soothing harmonies.

These two Oregon-grown wetland creatures, Mallory and Johnny, crossed paths in the beginning of 2025. They soon discovered their similar taste and background in music. After being awestruck by a particular mandala of frogs and butterflies at Christopher Marley’s Exquisite Creatures exhibit they saw at the OMSI museum, the name Amphibious Butterfly was born. The name encompasses both individuals styles: Johnny’s bold, bullfrog basslines and Mallory’s shimmering butterfly wing voice.

Other influences include: Norah Jones, Labi Siffre, Fleetwood Mac, Hiatus Kaiyote, Mac DeMarco, Stevie Wonder.

In addition to the core duo, we often collaborate with other local artists including John Jones (djembe percussionist), Iris Finch (multi-instrumentalist) and Aryc Kloninger (powerhouse vocalist) bolstering our sound for lively occasions.
